The motto of my alma mater is Pro Humanitate, for humanity, and I strive to live out this motto everyday. Recently I participated in the Pro Humanitate Day sponsored by the Alumni Office and coordinated by my lovely husband. During this one day project we worked at the Second Harvest Food Bank, where I sorted food to be packaged into pallets and sent to food banks around NWNC. I also participated in the Empty Bowls Project, in which we enjoyed a community soup lunch and picked out a handcrafted bowl from local artisans. Both events were wonderful opportunities to help the community, but it will take more than two volunteer sessions to make a dent in the food insecurities in this community. I am going to be a bit wordy because I think the statistics are important for us all to know. Here are a few alarming facts of NC hunger.

+ 18.3% of North Carolinians are food insecure

+25.7% of Children in NWNC are food insecure {and it is even worse while students are out for school}

+26% of North Carolinians who are food insecure are ineligible for government food programs {huge strain on local food banks}

+Food insecurity in children can impact their growth and brain development

Let’s all work together to eliminate HUNGER. How you ask?

Check out this fantastic organization, FEED, founded by Lauren Bush Lauren. The mission of the organization is to create stylish and fashion forward bags that use the proceeds around the world to help eliminate hunger. Every bag made is stamped with the number of meals served to children and mothers. FEED assists countries along the world along with local organizations in the United States. Check out their products. I was fortunate enough to meet Lauren Bush Lauren at the Pro Humanitate Day. It was very encouraging to hear of her experiences and motivation, and furthermore see the energy of Pro Humanitate amongst the college students. Below I have shared some photos of a few FEED Bags. Check the bags out, buy one for fashion, and feed a child.

The bag with a Pro Humanitate stamp was a custom print for Wake Forest, but the style without the stamp can be found on their website.
